The way we see it 

Cake has always been used to celebrate special occasions especially children’s birthday parties, but not every child gets one. Our founder, Chinelo (who grew up in Nigeria), visited many orphanages with her mother and secondary school in her youth to give care packages to the children. During these visits she noticed the children often didn’t know their real birthdays. If they did, it wasn’t celebrated and a cake was definitely not on the cards. Then came Good Cake Day…

Who we are

Good Cake Day is a London based cake company with a passion for combining quality ingredients with innovative techniques to create cakes, which are bursting with flavour and have amazing texture. As a social enterprise, we use a portion of our profits to commission a Nigerian cake company to make birthday cakes for the children in a partner orphanage every month.

At the core of Good Cake Day is the underlying belief that the good cake you enjoy, can make someone else have a good day. The “someone” in this case being an orphaned child who would otherwise not have a cake. Imagine for a second that you’re eating a delicious cake that is also making a child very very happy… That’s a good cake day!  

Does giving a free cake really make a difference?

Yes! Few things give joy and make you feel special like receiving a birthday cake. As lovers of all things cake and birthday related, we know first-hand that a cake on your birthday is more than just a cake. It’s a statement that someone out there loves, values and cherishes you enough to give you something special.

Can you spot our founder?? She loves a good gathering of friends on her birthday :) 

The feedback from Grandma Kathy (the lady who runs the orphanage) has been both heart-warming and encouraging. She says “the cake was simply beautiful and so so yummy. The kids ate every crumb… The birthday girls were acting quite sophisticated in the photos, but I saw a tear in Kitty’s eyes when she saw the beautiful cake. Last year, we had to make do with a pancake “cake”.  

These words spur us on to do more! Her home has 23 children and our aim is to commission 23 birthday cakes, representing each child, within the next 23 months. 

We partnered with Chipsy’s Oven (a cake company based in Nigeria) to make the cakes that go out to the orphanage every month. Our first cake went out on Valentine’s Day (happy coincidence) and we’ve been sending a cake out each month since then. 

Why crowdfunding?

We’re on Fundsurfer to help us increase our capacity. At three months old, we’re blown away by the support and interest we’ve experienced so far. A successful Fundsurfer campaign will fund the purchase of better commercial kitchen equipment and allow us work with an employment agency to receive help with large orders.  The more orders we can take on, the more free birthday cakes we can commission. The more free cakes we can commission, the more lives we can impact.

It will also give us a huge community of supportive early adopters (you!) who can help us shape the way we grow our business and impact lives, one cake at a time. Our challenge to you is to make Good Cake Day the very best company it can be. Are you up for it?
