The Tooting Twirl

On Sunday 16 July we are transforming Tooting Bus Turning Circle into a Pop-Up Village Green to bring our communities together for a day of fun in a surprising location.

Tooting, located in South London is a diverse and vibrant neighbourhood. Although there is no social space located in central Tooting, we have two large parks on the outskirts. But for this one-day only event we want to transform the Bus Turning Circle (next to Primark, opposite the Tube station entrance) into a Pop-Up Village Green, that way everyone walking past will be able to come and join in the fun.

What is the Pop-Up Village Green?

Building on the successes of last year's Tour de Tooting - a grand parade of wheels through Tooting's Town Centre - this year's Tooting Twirl will get us all sharing, connecting, relaxing, enjoying and talking to each other. Come and watch time slow down and enjoy the day with us:

But where will the buses go?

The buses will all still run. The bus drivers will instead turn their buses around and take their breaks on Wimbledon Road.

The team behind the Tooting Twirl

Jeni has lived in Tooting for 9 years is co-chair of Transition Town Tooting and has worked as a community artist for them since 2010. She is really looking forward to seeing the communities of Tooting getting to use their space in a whole new way. 

Lucy has lived in Tooting for 30 years. The best thing about the Tooting Twirl in her opinion is the fact that transforming public space helps connect our communities, re-imagine our neighbourhoods and its good to play! Through play we imagine the world the way we'd like it to be - healthy, happier, greener, more connected. "I'm looking forward to doing that with a twirl!"

Richard has lived in Tooting Bec for 8.5 years and moved here originally to make a famil home for his family, which includes his two sons. "I believe in the power of the community and am fascinated by what we can imagine together for the future of Tooting in events like the Tooting Twirl.

Jeni, Lucy and Richard are part of Transition Town Tooting, a local group learning how to ‘make change in how we live, where we live in the light of climate change’ and is part of a global movement of communities coming together to reimagine a world that is healthier, happier, more sustainable, creative and localised.
